About The Artist
Meghan E. Healey is a genre-defying designer, who works in experimental and conventional theater founded in grassroots and community-based practices. Working with a diverse group of artists from around the world Meghan has designed costume, scenic, and puppet elements for over 100 new works since making her professional debut in 1995.
Drawing on the idea of theater as ritual, Meghan embraces the performance space as a total environment initiating the audience’s journey the moment they arrive at the venue by infusing the entire space with her designs. She communicates her observation of clothing as an expression of the self in everyday life in the small details of each costume, showcasing her commitment to supporting the actor’s craft. Her bold color work, playful proportions, and vivid explorations of texture demonstrate the influence of ritual theater and meta-theatricality on her work and her interest in rejecting the fourth wall.
Meghan’s background in political theater and dramaturgy bring a detailed vision to each production. Her work has been praised for its originality, ferocious commitment to detail, and focus on a holistic ideal of performance.
She holds an MFA in Design for Stage and Film from the renowned Tisch School of the Arts, and is the Chair of the Department of Drama, Theater, and Dance at the School of Arts at Queens College CUNY.
